Why was Surah At-Takwir revealed?
This Makkan Surah was revealed to awaken hearts with vivid scenes of the Last Day and to refute the claims that the Messenger was a madman, a poet, or a soothsayer. It establishes that the Qur’an is conveyed by a noble, powerful, and trustworthy angel and is not sourced from devils. It confronts the moral corruption of the age, including the burying of infant girls alive, and warns that every soul will be brought to full account. It concludes by affirming human responsibility to seek uprightness while making clear that all will and guidance occur only by Allah’s will.

Cosmic unravelling at the onset of the Hour
The Surah opens with a sequence of cataclysmic signs: the sun will be wrapped up, its light folded and withdrawn, signaling the end of the world’s order. The stars will fall and dim, losing their luster and scattering from their stations. The mountains—once firm and immovable—will be set in motion, uprooted, pulverized, and blown away until they become like a mirage. These images detail the collapse of the observed universe, leaving no doubt that the ordinary cycles of nature will be dismantled as the Resurrection approaches. You are taught to grasp the certainty and scale of the event: the very pillars of the heavens and the earth will not remain as they are.
Worldly priorities overturned: neglected wealth, gathered beasts, and inflamed seas
The Surah declares that the most prized worldly assets will lose all value. The ten-month pregnant she-camel—the most valuable property among the Arabs—will be left unattended out of sheer terror; people will abandon what they typically guard most. The wild beasts will be gathered together, either driven together by the overwhelming fear of the Day or assembled for judgment. The seas will be set ablaze or filled to overflowing, becoming a single mass; both explanations highlight a complete transformation of the natural world as it was known. These scenes teach you that on that Day, fear and awe erase worldly attachments, and all creation is marshaled under divine command.
Souls paired for recompense
When souls are paired, it signifies the just organization of people for judgment. The pairing has been explained as each person being matched with his or her deeds, or with those of like belief and character (the righteous with the righteous, the wicked with the wicked), or with their records or counterparts ordained for them. The point is the same: you will be aligned in a way that reveals your true state and destiny. This pairing prepares the way for just recompense, manifesting the harmony between one’s inner reality and final outcome. You are instructed to live aware that your ultimate companionship will be with what you chose—belief and righteous action or disbelief and corruption.
Infanticide exposed: the buried girl is questioned
The Surah singles out the buried-alive girl to highlight the enormity of the crime and the certainty of justice. She will be asked: For what sin was she killed? The questioning is directed to the victim to intensify the condemnation and shame of the killer, making clear that the child bore no sin. This addresses a heinous custom and, more broadly, every act of oppression and bloodshed against the helpless. The teaching is direct: no injustice is forgotten; the Day unmasks every wrongdoer and vindicates every victim.
Records opened, sky stripped, Hell ignited, and Paradise brought near
The scrolls of deeds will be laid open and spread out, making hidden actions visible and ready for distribution to the right or left. The sky will be stripped away—peeled back to expose what lies beyond—removing all veils between creation and the realities of the Hereafter. Hell will be kindled, its blaze intensified to receive those who rejected truth, while Paradise will be brought near to the God-fearing, made accessible and prepared for their honor. These scenes establish the certainty of recompense: concealment ends, truth is unveiled, and destinations are made manifest. At that point every soul will know what it has brought forth, leaving no room for denial or excuse.
Oaths by receding celestial bodies, the night, and the morning
Allah swears by the receding stars that run their course and then hide, described as those which withdraw and disappear after moving—an image of planets or stars that emerge and then vanish from sight. The night is sworn by in its advancing and retreating, as the word used allows both senses, conveying the enveloping power of night’s approach and the dispersal at its end. The morning is mentioned when it breathes—when its light spreads and the day comes to life. These oaths frame the grandeur, order, and precision of the cosmos to emphasize the truth that follows. You are taught to read the signs in creation as testimony to the certainty and majesty of revelation.
The Qur’an is conveyed by a noble, powerful, and trustworthy messenger
The Surah affirms that this recitation is the speech delivered by a noble messenger—Jibril—who is mighty in power, held in high rank with the Lord of the Throne, obeyed by the angels in the heavens, and utterly trustworthy. These attributes establish the authority, purity, and reliability of the transmission. The Qur’an is not a human fabrication or a product of occult forces—it is divinely sent down through an exalted intermediary. The description of might, nearness, obedience, and trustworthiness removes every doubt about the source and integrity of the message. You are thus required to receive it with full confidence in its origin and preservation.
The Prophet’s integrity, sound mind, and true vision
The Surah defends the Messenger’s honor: your companion is not mad. He saw the messenger—Jibril—at the clear horizon, a true vision of the angel in his created form, confirming the objective reality of revelation. He is not withholding concerning the unseen nor is he accused in it: both well-known readings convey that he neither conceals any part of what was revealed nor is he suspected in his conveyance of it. He does not invent from himself; he only conveys what he has been commanded to deliver. You are instructed to trust his truthfulness, sanity, and faithful delivery of the message.
Not the word of a cursed devil: refutation of soothsaying and satanic sources
It is stated plainly that this recitation is not the word of a cast-out devil. Devils are prevented from eavesdropping on the heavens and cannot produce the guidance, coherence, or truth found in the Qur’an. This rejects the claim that the Prophet is a soothsayer or that the message is fueled by jinn or occult influences. The revelation’s content, order, and unwavering call to monotheism and righteousness are irreconcilable with the lies and confusion of devils. You are to dismiss every allegation that attributes the Qur’an to satanic or soothsaying sources.
A universal reminder, human willing, and the supremacy of Allah’s will
The Surah challenges: Where are you going? It is a universal reminder for all worlds, not confined to a tribe or time. Guidance is offered to whoever among you wills to be upright, affirming human responsibility to seek the straight path. Yet your willing itself does not occur except by Allah’s will, the Lord of all that exists, establishing that His decree encompasses all while not excusing you from the call to choose guidance. You are taught to strive for rectitude, humbly depending on Allah for success, knowing that ultimate sovereignty belongs to Him alone.
